The official union of Masters At Work took place in 1990 when Vega, a prominent DJ in New York, crossed paths with Gonzalez, a skilled producer, through the influential house DJ Todd Terry. The collaboration was sparked by Vega’s admiration for Gonzalez’s song “Salsa House,” a Latin-infused gem that captured his attention. Seeking to remix the track, Vega connected with Terry, and the instant chemistry between Vega and Gonzalez was fueled by their shared passion for music in all its forms.

Born in the Bronx in 1965, Vega grew up surrounded by the rich sounds of Latin music, with his father being an accomplished saxophone player and his uncle a renowned salsa singer, Hector Lavoe. While embracing his Puerto Rican heritage in music, it was Vega’s sisters, regulars at David Mancuso’s famed Loft parties and Paradise Garage, who introduced him to the vibrant world of dance music. Inspired by the magic of DJ Larry Levan at Paradise Garage in 1980, Vega witnessed the seamless blending of music genres and eras, foreshadowing the ethos of Masters At Work.

Throughout the mid-’80s, Vega made a name for himself as an emerging DJ, playing house and freestyle in hotspots like Devil’s Nest, Roseland, and Studio 54. Simultaneously, he ventured into remixes and original rhythm tracks, with one of his early breaks being the remix of Information Society’s “Running” for Tommy Boy. The journey of Masters At Work embodies the spirit of musical exploration and genre-blending that continues to shape the landscape of house music.
