UNITED STATES: Fulbright Foreign Student Programme 2023/2024: What Is UNITED STATES: Fulbright Foreign Student Programme 2023/2024 About? The Fulbright Foreign Student Program in South Africa offers funding to South African university graduates who wish to pursue post-graduate study in any topic at a university in the United States (excludes MBA and studies that require contact with patients). The Fulbright Foreign Student Programme is soliciting applications for the 2023-2024 school year.
Students are chosen through a thorough application and interview process and get extensive support, including visa processing and health insurance, as well as a complete pre-departure orientation and re-entry session.

Eligibility Status:
- Be a South African citizen OR a permanent resident who has lived in South Africa for at least 5 years (please note that South African individuals who have dual citizenship with the United States are not eligible for the program);
- For non-degree studies (visiting student researcher): Must be enrolled in a PhD program at a South African university;
- When applying for a Master’s degree, you must have a four-year bachelor’s degree, a three-year bachelor’s degree plus an honours year, or a four-year B-Tech degree.
- When applying for a Doctoral degree, you must have a Master’s degree;
- Have an adequate command of the English language to pursue graduate-level studies in the United States;
- Be able to achieve the needed minimum scores on standardized examinations such as the GRE and TOEFL (which Fulbright will assess if you are invited to the semi-final stage);
- Demonstrate academic excellence
- Preference will be given to applicants who have not held a Fulbright Scholarship before.
- Students already studying in the United States are NOT eligible.
- Be extremely motivated and dedicated to returning to South Africa after the program;
- Demonstrate the ability to lead;
- Demonstrate a sense of civic responsibility by participating in extracurricular activities;
- Have a desire to contribute to Fulbright Alumni activities by returning to your community/university;
- Recognize the importance of cross-cultural sensitivity and flexibility in adjusting to life as a student in the United States;
- Have no recent or extensive experience in the United States.
Degree level
- MA/PhD: Post-graduate students may apply for scholarships towards Master’s or Doctorate degrees. Scholarships are awarded for two years towards one degree – Master’s or Doctorate (renewable each year).
- Visiting Student Researcher (non-degree) : South African PhD students enrolled with a South African University may apply to conduct one year’s research at a U.S. University as a Visiting Student Researcher (VSR). Current National Research Foundation (NRF) funded PhD students are encouraged to apply.
Deadlines
The application deadline is 01 May 2022.
The Scholarship Package
- Travel allowance and transportation from South Africa to the allowed location in the United States;
- Health advantages;
- Arriving in the United States and settling in allowance;
- A monthly maintenance allowance (to help with living costs);
Fees and tuition; - Allowance for books and computers;
- Sponsorship of J-1 visas
Laboratory fees are not included in the Fulbright SARSP’s normal benefits package and are only granted on a case-by-case basis and if funds is available.
